How to Prepare for NECO Exams

What Is NECO?

The National Examinations Council (NECO) SSCE is an alternative to WAEC, widely accepted by Nigerian universities. Like WAEC, it tests core subjects and requires credits in five or more subjects including English and Mathematics for university admission.

Key Differences Between NECO and WAEC

  • NECO is conducted by a Nigerian body; WAEC is West African.
  • NECO results are released faster on average.
  • Some schools and universities prefer WAEC, but NECO is equally valid for JAMB, Post-UTME, and admissions.

How to Prepare for NECO

Step 1: Get the Syllabus

Download the NECO syllabus for each subject. This is your blueprint — study only what is in it.

Step 2: Practice Past Questions

NECO questions follow predictable patterns. Practise at least 5 years of past questions per subject. Focus on understanding the marking scheme.

Step 3: Practise CBT

Many state schools now conduct NECO preparations using CBT. Getting comfortable with computer-based testing reduces exam-day anxiety.

Step 4: Review Weak Areas

After each mock exam, identify your three weakest topics and dedicate extra time to them before the next session.
